Comparing American and English Culture
Both American and English cultures are interesting and alike, but there are important differences.
Perspective 1: In Favor of English Culture
In my opinion, English culture is above American culture. English culture is much more classic, more sophisticated, and more welcoming. While being a foreigner, whenever I visit their country, I am received in a much friendlier way than in the United States.
Now I will speak of some of the most positive aspects of England. England is a more intellectual country with a lot more museums and shows. We also find a great cultural diversity, which I think is positive because it shows that English society has no problems welcoming other cultures. Furthermore, the English like football a lot, just like me, and invest heavily in it.
I do not really like American culture because Americans themselves can be a little uneducated and indifferent to other cultures. The only good things America has are its food and shopping. To conclude, the English are much more cultured and far more interesting.
Perspective 2: In Favor of American Culture
In my opinion, when comparing American and English culture, American is the best. Americans are a pioneering people and very revolutionary in the world. The United States is a country that offers great shopping, where we can buy things for less money than in Portugal. Americans also have a major influence worldwide in music and cinema. America has famous major cities such as New York, Washington, D.C., and others. They also have restaurants and culinary options that do not exist in Portugal or in other countries like England.
I do not like English culture because they still follow the monarchy and seem like people who think they are superior to others. Furthermore, with Brexit, the English are worsening the world economic situation, affecting everything and everyone. To conclude, I like American culture and America much more.
Perspective 3: Linguistic and Cultural Nuances
Both America and England represent two great nations known all over the world. However similar they are, they have various differences that make them unique, such as pronunciation (which is the most pronounced difference), spelling, grammar, culture, and vocabulary.
As for pronunciation, it is audible to everyone that the British accent (as many say) is more musical, whereas the American accent is not as much. Regarding grammar, we can say that English usage is a bit more formal, traditional, and explanatory, whereas Americans often shorten phrases (for example, stay at home in British English versus stay home in American English).
Just as in many countries, cultures are generally very distinct; therefore, these two nations are no exception. Having experienced both in person, I can conclude that I prefer English culture for the reasons presented above.
